Comic-Con 2016: All the news, trailers and releases
Comic-Con International: San Diego is always a much-anticipated event. Even though the main focus is no longer on comics, there is plenty to keep every type of geeky attendee captivated. This year’s event ran from 21 to 24 July. Aside from the wonderful costumes that the fans donned throughout the event, here are the main attractions that got everyone talking:
The app’s meteoric rise to success meant that the creators, Niantic, were forced to upgrade their venue for this year’s Comic-Con to accommodate its hordes of fans. At their conference they revealed the team leaders: Blanche for Team Mystic (the blue team), Candela for Team Valor (the red team) and Spark for Team Instinct (the yellow team). Spark has already been the butt of the joke on social media ever since the reveal, mainly due to his geeky looks (and leather trousers), but hopefully that will die down.
Trading will soon become available and new critters from beyond the first-generation will be added to the current 150-strong stable of Pokémon. There were plenty of hints about Easter Eggs in Pokémon Go, including one on how to control Eevee’s evolution into one of three special Pokémon.
Customisable Pokéstops and perhaps even Pokémon Centers are also on the cards. Many users have asked for breeding to become a feature, but there is no consensus yet from the creators about whether this will happen or not. Niantic’s current focus is on server stability and making the app available worldwide.
To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary SEGA made some special announcements.
Firstly, there is the new upcoming game called Sonic Mania. It will be a 2D platformer that revisits the games from the 1990s with brand-new zones and three playable characters, namely Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. It will be released during the first half of 2017 and be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
A mobile game called Sonic Dash, that is free to download, was also released. You play as Sonic in this endless runner 3D platformer. It will feature the classic Green Hill zone as a bonus.
The biggest news for many is the upcoming release of a brand-new Sonic game for Xbox One, PC and PS4 and the yet-to-be-released Nintendo NX. Details are minimal at this point but it was hinted that it will be in the same vein as Sonic Generations.
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Harry Potter still has a massive following all over the world despite the fact that the last movie was released five years ago. Now fans have something new to look forward to in the form of a prequel film called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It is based on the book of the same name by J.K. Rowling. The story will follow Newt Scamander as he tries to contain magical creatures that have escaped from his briefcase into the non-magical Muggle world. The trailer showed that we can expect a film more suited to mature audiences than the original Harry Potter movies with a political twist.
- DC’s Justice League
After the disappointing Batman v Superman, DC might be getting back on track by the looks of the Justice League trailer and their announcement of not one but two upcoming releases. The characters we will be seeing in this movie and its Part Two include Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Cyborg, Shazam and Martian Manhunter. The villain is still unknown but people are speculating that it might be Steppenwolf or Darkseid. Expect to see Justice League: Part One in 2017 and Justice League: Part Two in 2019.
- Marvel’s Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman made a spectacular appearance at the end of Batman v Superman and finally she is getting her very own feature film. Very few plot details have been announced but judging by the trailer at least some of it will take part during World War I.
- Marvel’s Black Panther
As part of Marvel’s five-year Cinematic Universe plan, we are being spoiled with amazing superhero stories. So far we’ve seen solo films for Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man and more. Now we’re getting a feature film featuring the neglected and underrated Black Panther. A bunch of strong Oscar-winning women have signed up, and shooting is to commence in January 2017.
- Marvel’s Doctor Strange
The Master of the Mystic Arts, Doctor Strange, is also coming to the big screen. The plot follows neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock and Star Trek fame) while he learns mysticism and the conquering of alternate dimensions after being involved in a car accident. Doctor Strange essentially acts as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond using metaphysical abilities and artefacts. The movie will be released during November 2016.
- Power Rangers reboot
Now here is a blast from the past! The popular television series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first came to light during the 1990s. A large franchise was built around this with 23 television seasons and two feature films being released over the years. Now the Power Rangers are back with a third film where the five high school students have to use their combined powers to fight an alien threat that wants to destroy Earth. It is rumoured to be much more mature but still playful with costumes that are reminiscent of Iron Man’s suit. Let’s hope that the storyline isn’t as corny as we’ve come to expect from the series.
- The CW channel released a sizzle reel for upcoming new seasons of all the favourites including Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
- A Season 7 teaser trailer for Game of Thrones was released showing the new sets, costumes and props. In the trailer Tyrion Lannister announces, “Welcome home my queen” as an ominous sign of what’s to come. A blooper reel for Season 6 of GoT also made its appearance.
- The creators of the brilliant Fargo television series have a new upcoming show called Legion. It will be a live-action X-Men series that focuses on the journey of David Haller, a man who has been hearing voices and seeing visions in his head all his life and his discovery that they might in fact be real.
- Marvel is collaborating with Netflix to bring us a Luke Cage and also an Iron Fist web television series.
- The Walking Dead teased their 7th season and the show’s accompanying series, Fear the Walking, showed scenes from the second half of the second season.
- It was revealed that the anti-hero Ghost Rider is coming to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- A new Star Trek series (Star Trek Discovery) is coming to our television screens sometime next year and a sneak peek of the new ship, U.S.S. Discovery, was shown.
